Bobby Shafto Caravan Park is ideally placed for Beamish Museum and Tanfield Railway. We spent one night here in August 2013.
It is a lot smaller than it looks on the website. There are a couple of large caravan fields with statics and tourers, and a touring field for caravans and tents. There are also some wooden camping pods.

Entry is by access card only. The reception doubles as the shop. The main toilet and shower block is down behind the reception building.
The tent field has a small pre-fab toilet block accessed by the key card. The door is a bit hard to manage for youngsters and the cubicles are very small, but it’s adequate and wasn’t overly dirty.
There are two play areas – There is a zip wire in the middle of the touring field, with a small fenced football pitch. There is also a play area with a play frame and a set of swings just behind the touring field.
The field is on a hill, and the pitches have a very slight incline to them, but not too much. The views are fantastic.
There is a club-house which opens at 8pm, but we didn’t try it out. Apparently they do karaoke on the weekend.
Overall, Bobby Shafto Caravan Park was clean and safe, and quiet (apart from the noisy woman in the tent next to ours, but that’s another story!). We’d definitely go back if in the area.
We paid £25 for one night for four people including an electric hook-up.
To find it, you follow the signs to Beamish Museum. Just before the entrance to the museum (which you’ll see as it’s huge), turn right and then left, following the caravan park signs. Up a windy road, then Bobby Shafto is on the right. Easy peasy!
