The Blue Pool, Wareham, Dorset

We had a day out at the Blue Pool this week. A couple of miles outside Wareham in Dorset, the Blue Pool is a beautiful place for a family day out.

We started our visit with a cafe pitstop for coffee and cake to fuel our walk. We ate in the cafes sunroom with a gorgeous view overlooking the Pool itself, and I shared a very tasty scone with Syd while Max polished off a huge chocolate muffin.

The Pool itself is in a deep clay bowl surrounded by 25 acres of heath. There are several different paths you can follow, one of which is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. To get down to the pool and it’s beachy edge does require steps, and we chose to leave our pushchair at the top and walked down carrying Syd, but you can still enjoy the beautiful views without doing this.

There is a squirrel (and occasionally owl and woodpecker!) hunt for children, I have to say that it requires a very beady eye, we spotted some, but I am glad that Max was more interested in taking photos as I am not sure I was up to the job of finding all of them – certainly younger children would need adult help for this!

There are lots of well positioned benches to stop and enjoy the scenery or eat your picnic. We paused a while by a smaller pond and had a great time dragonfly spotting. Max made good use of the information board and took delight in sharing the names of the ones he spotted, but they proved remarkably difficult to photograph!!

We rounded off the walk at the playarea, a nice obstacle course, with swings and slide at the end. We also popped up the steps here to the viewpoint overlooking Poole bay and Corfe Castle.

After a quick visit to the Wareham Bears in their home in the gift shop we got back in the car to go home.

It costs £15 for a family ticket (2 adults and up to 4 children), and although you can walk for free in similar places nearby, the pool is beautiful, and with kids in tow it’s always nice to have a few extras to keep them entertained. I thought the price was reasonable. We had a lovely few hours and I would return another summer.
