If you’re thinking of a weekend break in Oxford with the family, you’ll want to know some of the local attractions to keep them entertained. The historic buildings and beautiful scenery will only keep their attention for so long before cries of “I’m bored” are echoing down the Thames. Fortunately there’s plenty to do, and here are four fantastic adventures for kids in Oxford.

1.    The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. Let their imaginations run wild at this museum which celebrates the life and writings of one of Britain’s most revered children’s authors. They’ll learn all about Roald Dahl’s life, what inspired him to write amazing stories like Fantastic Mr. Fox and James And The Giant Peach, and be able to look around a replica of his famed writing shed. There’s also a story and activity centre with all kinds of creative and crafty activities for everyone to enjoy. A full programme of special events also runs throughout the year so be sure to check their website and see what’s on when you visit.

2.   Dancing On Ice. If you want something physical to let the kids unleash all that pent up energy then pay a visit to the Oxford Ice Rink. With regular public skating times and a café on site it’s the perfect spot to let them tire themselves out. You can hire skates and everything you need, or buy equipment from the shop. Plus it’s just a ten minute walk from town so it’s easy to get to if you’re without a car.

3.   Open Their Minds At Science Oxford Live. They might not enjoy sitting through double Chemistry with Mister Jones on Friday afternoon, but kids love the practical side of science. At Science Oxford Live they can get hands on with tons of exhibits which will show them the inner workings of the world around them. With activities suitable for all ages from toddlers up, this is a great day out for the whole family.

4.  Explore Oxford Castle. This old castle was originally built in the Norman era, but was largely rebuilt in stone during the 11thcentury. For centuries it was used for a prison, right up until 1996! Now you can explore the castle from the dungeons to the parapets. Throughout you’ll find costumed character guides who will tell you fascinating stories about the castle and its many occupants. Allegedly haunted by no less than 15 ghosts, a trip to Oxford castle is sure to be memorable.

Oxford is full of great things to see and do for everybody. Although the kids might not enjoy a trip around The Bodleian as much as you, there’s still lots for them to look forward to. Be sure to make the most of your stay in the city and enjoy these attractions and the others on offer.
