Hornsea, East Yorkshire

Hornsea is a seaside town in East Yorkshire, a few miles down the coast from Bridlington.

It is a traditional seaside town and, to be honest, there’s not much there. There are some caravan parks, and the usual amusement arcades, fish and chip shops, and B&Bs. For us as a young family, it is perfect.

The beach is fairly clean, with a mixture of sand and pebble. The sea, like most of the area, is brown looking, but otherwise quite safe. The beach has only a very slight incline to it, which for our toddlers is fine.

There are car parks available for either payment (central-ish) or some free ones slightly to the north of the main beach. The beach is accessible by pram and wheelchair as there are concrete ramps as well as steps. There is an office near The Floral Hall (signposted) where you can get information and hire out a beach hut.

We find Hornsea is great because it’s close by and less busy than the other local seaside towns like Scarborough or Bridlington.

There has been some investment in Hornsea recently, and there are some new features, like a really nice little seating area on the promenade. The fish and chip shop behind this area is well recommended, as is Sullivan’s restaurant.

What we love most about Hornsea is that the best feature, the clean and fairly quiet beach, is totally free!
