Check out our post – Things to do in Hull with the kids
Ferens Art Gallery in Hull city centre is one of the free museums run by the local council.
It houses a wide variety of permanent galleries of paintings and sculptures, both old and new. It also has a few spaces which are used for temporary exhibits. Recently, these exhibitions have included work by David Hockney, Andy Warhol, and Leonardo Da Vinci.
Today, we visited as part of the museums service’s half-term activities. We joined in a workshop to make some excellent 3D landscapes.
Then we had a drink and a treat in the cafe…….
Then we had a look at some items from the permanent exhibitions……

Upstairs, there is a children’s gallery. Here, you can interact with art and learn about different artistic concepts (There is a lift if you need to take pushchairs or wheelchairs).
Here you can dress up – you can ask to get access to the costume cupboard – or do like we did and just use a net curtain you find lying in the props corner and make like you’re a wistful renaissance-era lady.
Then on to the last room – the upstairs gallery.
Because life art is the funniest kind, right? |
Yes, this art gallery is not purely for children but the activities they do are squarely aimed at families and we really enjoyed making our landscapes today. The Children’s gallery was very good despite its small size.
There are toilets and baby changing facilities, and a pretty good gift shop. The whole bottom floor is very navigable and accessible. There is a lift to the upstairs galleries.
The art gallery is on the route of the Hull Fish Trail too.
Best of all – it’s free!! A brilliant way of passing an hour or two.
They have activities planned for Easter 2013 already. For more information, please go to their website.
