With the school holidays approaching, you may be worried about the expense of keeping your children entertained. Never fear, Kids Days Out Reviews are here to bring you some of the best FREE family days out.
To help you through the days ahead, here are some ideas for family days out in Yorkshire. They are all either free or low cost (such as having to pay for parking)
I’ve split it up into four sections – North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire.

Free family days out in North Yorkshire
The National Railway Museum. Free to enter. You can spend all day here looking at trains, train art, and train paraphenalia. Some exhibitions carry an entrance charge, as do some special events, but the main museum is totally free, and awesome for little train fans. Read our review here – The National Railway Museum
Walk the walls in York. The medieval walls almost make up a perfect circle around the city of York, and they are great for walking and totally free. Some parts are unsuitable for very young walkers, and there are lots of steps. For older children, it’s a wonderful immersion in history.
Valley Gardens in Harrogate has been recommended by Samantha of North East Family Fun, who had a fantastic free day out there. There are lots to do for children of all ages. Have a read at Valley Gardens, Harrogate
Peasholm Park is a historic public park in Scarborough. There are often free concerts from the famous bandstand and plenty of places to picnic. The park is picturesque with streams and the Oriental-inspired bridges, and it’s lovely just to walk around. You can do the free tree trail and learn about the different trees in the park. You can hire a dragon-headed pedalo and explore the lake. Learn more at Peasholm Park
Brimham Rocks is a site run by English Heritage. The site is free to enter, however, the parking is not, so fill your car up for maximum value. It is a great, cheap day out though and a wonderful place for a nature trail with plenty of spots to enjoy a picnic. You can read our review at Brimham Rocks
Brayton Barff near Selby is one of many Yorkshire Water managed amenity sites which is free to the public. It’s good for a nature walk and a picnic and is entirely free. Read more here – Brayton Barff
Free Family Days Out in West Yorkshire
Angler’s Country Park in Wakefield has a free Room on the Broom trail which looks amazing for little fans of the popular children’s book. Cathy from Mummy Travels tells us more at Room on the Broom trail
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield is acres and acres of country walks and works of art from some of the biggest names in sculpture. You can tire out little legs whilst looking at work from Antony Gormley, Henry Moore, and Barbara Hepworth. For more information, check out our review of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
The National Media Museum in Bradford is fantastic for a rainy day. With exhibitions on TV production, gaming and computing, and the history of the internet, this is a great day out for geeks of all ages. We love it. Read our review of the National Media Museum
The Royal Armouries is huge and totally free. On the waterfront in Leeds, it’s floors of homage to warfare and weaponry. It’s more fun than it sounds and is brilliant if you have to help with a school history project. Read our review at The Royal Armouries.
National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield is one Free day out we haven’t yet tried. It looks like a fun way to learn about how many people in Yorkshire would have earned their living over the years. Free Family Days Out in East Yorkshire
Hornsea Mere is a haven for birds and wildlife and provided many an afternoon out in my own childhood. With a cafe, mini golf, and boats to hire, Hornsea Mere is amazing on a sunny day. Free to enter and to explore.
Humber Bridge Country Park is totally free and good for a day of walking, cycling, and hunting for bugs. With a couple of play parks, and views onto the River Humber, the country park is a popular day out for locals. Free parking, free to walk on top of the bridge, and plenty of picnic areas make this a cheap family day out. Read our article about Humber Bridge Country Park.
Ferens Art Gallery in Hull is due to host the Turner Prize in 2017 and has recently been refurbished. It is one of many free museums in Hull City Centre. The Streetlife Museum in Hull and the Hull and East Riding Museum next door are a fantastic combo of free fun. The Streetlife Museum has displays of transport and street scenes of the olden days. There is a rather good bicycle gallery! The East Riding Museum has Roman mosaics, dioramas of Viking invasions, and a full-sized woolly mammoth. Read our review at Streetlife Museum Hull.

Free Family days out in South Yorkshire
Graves Park Animal Farm in Sheffield is a petting farm within a park, and apart from the small charge for parking, and some cash for a pot of animal feed, is completely free. Bookmarking this one for the next time we’re in the area. Read more over on Hello from Jo and her trip to Graves Park
Weston Park Museum in Sheffield is free entry though you might have to pay to park to get close by. It is an award-winning family museum where you can learn more about the history of Sheffield. Learn more at Weston Park Museum
Cusworth Hall, Museum and Park near Doncaster is a museum in a stately home with extensive parkland. It’s around £6 to park all day so fill your car up to get the best value. Learn more from the Cusworth Hall website
