Joanne and the girly gang review family days out around the UK and beyond, with a little help from their friends.

A review of the Futliit LED backpack. The photo shows the rucksack on a staircase.

Product Review: Futliit LED backpack

This winter, we’ve been road testing a great product – a Futliit LED backpack. It’s a regular, good quality backpack suitable for adults or children with a very welcome feature – inbuilt LED lights.

On the face of it, the Futliit LED backpack looks like a regular one. At the touch of a small button or two, it lights up and enables the wearer to be seen in the dark. This is a great backpack for early morning or evening commutes, night-walking, or the walk to and from school.

Book review: Create Your Own Confidence: Activities to build children’s confidence and self-esteem

This last couple of weeks, we have been lucky enough to have been able to take a look at a couple of books written by our very good blogging friend Becky Goddard-Hill, the brand new Create Your Own Confidence and Be Confident, Be You; the Teenage Guide.

These books are written for children and young adults to help with self-esteem, confidence, and mindfulness. With an epidemic of mental health problems across many sectors of society, I can’t help feel that these books can be nothing but positive.

Create Your Own Confidence: Activities to build children’s confidence and self-esteem by Becky Goddard Hill

This book is brand new. It is aimed at children aimed from 7 – 12 years and I think this is about right. It is bright, has some fantastic illustrations and very accessible language. There are activities to do, some using the book and some not, and a lot of help in understanding the theory behind emotions and behaviour. The book is highly engaging and easy to read.

I think my favourite page is this one where Becky uses the example of a duck in explaining how to overcome fears. I have never seen a duck used in a children’s psychology book before but I am all for it. More things should be explained with ducks.

I asked my children to tell me what they liked about this book……

R, aged 12 said “I love the book Create Your Own Confidence because it made me feel more mindful and understand why people might be sad etc.

It also helped me with my breathing and how to feel relaxed when angry. Sometimes when I see people in my school I get angry but this book helped suggest breathing exercises to be calm.

I also like how some of the pages have interactive things such as: colouring in, writing feelings and circling stuff!

I am more than half way and I read it every night before I sleep. It is very good and a person who never reads, this book is fun.”

Be Confident, Be You; the Teenage Guide by Becky Goddard-Hill

Be Confident, Be You is similar to Create You Own Confidence but for pre-teens and teens. It is aimed at young people who are 12 years +, which again I think is about right. My older teen would probably not be overly patronised by the content and I also found it very engaging and insightful as an adult.

To reflect the older kid vibe, there’s more in this book about building confidence in areas that would be beneficial professionally, such as public speaking and finding motivation. If this had been around when I was a teenager, I know I would have relished it.

I asked the other 12-year old to take a look at this one.

E, aged 12 said “I like how this book is actually helpful, because school just tells kids to come to them if they have a problem/if they are upset, but most teenagers aren’t comfortable doing that, and this book shows you what actually helps.

I like how there was quotes at the top of every page, because quotes make it easier to remember things. For example, I probably won’t remember; “If you avoid life, you can’t solve everything you want to, so you need to do something about it.”

However, I might remember: “You cannot find peace by avoiding life.” So when I need to fix something, I would always remember that quote. (page 70/chapter 14.)

I also like how it makes you feel understood when you read it, such as: how it says percentages, for example: ‘90% of how well the talk will go is determined before the speaker steps on the platform.’ Even though it might not be 90%, it makes you feel like you are relatable to people your age.”

Thank you to Becky and her team for letting us take a look at these. We have enjoyed them and am sure we have learned some things which will be of benefit to our own mental well-being now and in the future.

Disclosure – we were sent copies of this book in return for our honest opinion

The Railway Children at Hull Truck Theatre

This year’s seasonal family show (it is NOT a panto) at Hull Truck Theatre is The Railway Children. We were invited to the press night to go and take a look, and we are very pleased that we did. This is rescheduled from 2020 and I think we can forgive them as well, you know, pandemic and all that, and because it’s a gem of a show which is perfect family entertainment and could be their best yet.

Liverpool FC Stadium Tours, Liverpool

Disclosure – Liverpool FC Stadium Tours provided us with a family ticket for this review. All opinion (and chants of YNWA) is our own

It was about 1992 when I last set foot in Anfield. It was for a match and I went with my Dad, a lifelong Liverpool fan, my brother, uncle and cousins. We travelled the almost three hours on the train, ran from Liverpool train station to Anfield in time for kick off. Watched the Mighty Reds beat Nottingham Forest, then walked back to the train station and travelled three hours back home. I didn’t get to see much of the stadium, and very little of Liverpool itself.

YHA London Central, London

Over the summer, we decided to take advantage of lots of people avoiding the big cities and made a trip down to London. The twins were desperate to go again and see more of what we didn’t see on previous trips. We will run out of things to see at some point, I’m sure, though I’m an adult and still haven’t seen everything myself!

For our stay, we opted to stay with YHA (again!). I love YHA and YHA London Central didn’t disappoint. Previously we have stayed at YHA St Pauls in London as well as other YHAs around the UK.

Lone Flyer at Hull Truck Theatre

Thank you to Hull Truck Theatre for inviting us to see their latest show Lone Flyer: The Last Flight of Amy Johnson. It was a much welcomed return to the theatre for us. It’s been far too long!

Lone Flyer is a two-man/woman play all about the life of Hull’s famous pilot Amy Johnson. Amy is played by local born actress Louise Willoughby and everyone else (Amy’s father, her first love, her husband, her engineer friend, and even her best friend Winifred) is played by the very versatile Benedict Salter.

Days out by bus in East Yorkshire

How do you travel on your days out? Do you have a car? Maybe you let the train take the strain? Or are you more of a bus fan?

I have teamed up with East Yorkshire Buses to show you how taking a bus can enhance your family day out.

I am a huge transport fan of all kinds, both private and public. I think that all forms of transport have their time and place, and they all certainly have their pros and cons. The transport I choose to use for a particular trip depends on a lot of factors, such as ease of parking, bus fare v petrol cost, and how much I feel like driving. Sometimes, I just can’t be doing with it!

Burnby Hall Gardens, East Yorkshire

It’s been a while since we last visited Burnby Hall Gardens in East Yorkshire. We went there in 2013 and you can read our review here. I remember thoroughly enjoying our visit and thinking what a beautiful place it is and wondered why it had taken me so long to visit in the first place. Going back this week, I still feel exactly the same. There have been some improvements made but it is essentially, reassuringly, the same Burnby Hall Gardens I remember from 8 years ago.

5 ways to make your attraction family friendly

Years of taking my famiily around days out and attractions around the UK has taught me many things – one of which is that places which sell themselves as ‘family friendly’ are often way off the mark. Having parent and baby parking and chicken nuggets on the menu does not cut it. Not every place can truly call itself family friendly.

Today, we have a guest post from Carly Straughan of QLINE Consulting, an experienced tourism consultant who has spent years helping attractions to be able to cater for their target markets.
