If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to sit in a Van Gogh painting, then look no further than the Van Gogh Immersive Experience. From now until the 19th April 2020, you can visit St Mary’s Church in York (or from 7th Feb at All Saints’ Church in Leicester) and have an audio-visual experience of Van Gogh’s work.

Go Ape! at Dalby Forest, Yorkshire
What to do on the rainiest of days during the rainiest of rainiest summer holidays in living memory? Most mums, especially the sensible ones, would stay indoors, break open the craft box, and have a cosy afternoon in. Me? I take on the challenge of Go Ape! Who wouldn’t, right? Apart from all those sensible people obviously. Continue reading
The Forbidden Corner, Leyburn, North Yorkshire
So last year, we visited a place we’d been meaning to go for ages – The Forbidden Corner in Leyburn. It’s very popular and you have to pre-book. We’d heard lots of good things about it, so set a date to go up there and make a weekend of it. The only tickets we could get were for a 1 pm entry. We weren’t sure this would give us enough time in the park but decided to take it anyway as finding spare days to get anywhere seems to be more effort these days! Did we enjoy it? I think so. I’m still not sure what to make of it, to be honest. Continue reading

York Boat, York, North Yorkshire
York Boat are the most well-known boat tour company in York. They have sailings up and down the River Ouse daily from February to November. They also run special trips, such as the upcoming Santa Cruises.
One sunny but cold Sunday in October, we went aboard to find out what York Boat do best. Continue reading
Middleham Castle, Middleham, North Yorkshire
Middleham Castle near Leyburn in North Yorkshire is most famous as being the childhood home of Richard III. You know, the one they recently dug up from under a car park in Leicester, and subject of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. It’s not as homely now, but it makes a fascinating day out, and all for free if you are a member of English Heritage.
YHA Grinton Lodge, Richmond, North Yorkshire
As a family of six, we can rarely find a hotel to suit our needs. We end up getting two standard rooms and have to sleep one adult and two children per room. Either that or upgrade to a very expensive suite.
Whenever we go away as a family, we tend to get a self-catering cottage, or we camp. But as much as we love camping, I don’t (and won’t) do it all year round. At Easter, the choice was between two rooms in a Travelodge on the side of the A1 in North Yorkshire, or to try a Youth Hostel from YHA. We decided it was time to give a youth hostel a go, and we are so glad that we did!
Joining in the Stick Man Games at Dalby Forest
Today, we headed up to Dalby Forest to take part in a very special, once-in-a-lifetime (possibly) sporting event – The Stick Man Games! Who doesn’t love the story of Stick Man by Julia Donaldson?
White Scar Caves, Ingleton, North Yorkshire
The last day of our Lake District holiday was a bit fraught as I’d mistakenly thought that check-out time was 11am when it was in fact 10am. Oops. While the girls were off out of the way swimming with Dad, I was frantically packing us all back into our car, and preparing a picnic for our stopover point of White Scar Caves, which is near Ingleton and on our way back to our Yorkshire home. Continue reading
Playdale Farm Park, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
This weekend we visited Playdale Farm Park, just a few miles south of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, and we had an awesome afternoon.
Playdale Farm Park had a good mix of outdoor and indoor activities, and would be perfectly fine for a visit on a sunny or a rainy day, and suits children up to the age of 10. Continue reading
